Last month the entire crew from A Film About Coffee ventured across the Pacific to celebrate the Japanese premier of the film. Japan has long been an a place of inspiration for us at Avos and Cocos, both in the way they treat coffee and their culture at large. It is rare to find a place so bussling with people that still feels so serene, well-tended and completely functional. We filmed in Tokyo for AFAC about three years ago and made friends with some of the most interesting people in the Tokyo coffee scene— chief among them is Katsu of Bear Pond Espresso. He became a key figure in the film, representing the Japanese coffee market with style only he could. It was such a thrill for us to have him speak at the screening and watch his reaction to the film.
While in Japan we played tourist as best we could by attending a Sumo match (a once and a lifetime experience), getting out into the country to see some temples, soaking in some hot springs. We also ate to our heart's content, and, of course, visited many of the amazing cafes in Tokyo. Japan we'll see you just as soon as we can!
